This project is a progressive renovation of a midcentury modern home in New Canaan, Connecticut. Located a few houses down from Phillip Johnson’s Wiley House, and in an area where a number of extant examples of midcentury homes are sited, this home was in need of a significant architectural intervention.

Our approach was to retain a number of the existing architectural features, including oversized 13.5" cedar shakes, deep eave overhangs, and a darker color palette - but to introduce a more progressive architectural language that was reflective of the new homeowner's contemporary design taste and of their desire to have a more usable home and yard. Our design took cues from the rich midcentury palette and language and also introduced black steel, rich cedar, and pops of bright primary color.

New windows and doors, a garage reconfiguration, and new primary and secondary entrances (marked by warm vertical tongue and groove cedar) were the focus of our design. A stepped and terraced stone retaining wall was introduced to manage the complicated grade changes. Design with Adam Wagoner AIA.
